Belgium LIEGE SAINT PAUL CATHEDRAL MOSAN GOTHIC CHURCH, 1865 Art Print Engraving

Description: CHURCH OF ST. JAMES Artist: T. Allom ____________ Engraver: Deeble Note: the title in the table above is printed below the engraving AN ANTIQUE STEEL ENGRAVING MADE IN THE 1860s !! ITEM IS OVER 130 YEARS OLD! VERY OLD WORLD! INCREDIBLE DETAIL! The saint jacques or Saint James church is probably the most beautiful and most impressive church of Liège. Originally the church was meant as a stop for pilgrims on the road to Santiago the Compostella in Spain. The building offers a nice overview of the different stages in medieval architecture. Their are remainders from the first Ottonian church of the 12th century. The nave and the choir show the typical late-gothic style of the 16th century. The Northern entrance has a Renaissance sculpture 'The dream of Jacob'. Inside, all the attention is drawn to the magnificent gothic vaults with their arabesques in early Renaissance style. They belong to the most beautiful on the continent. Some stained-glass windows from 1525 portray the donators (the families Van der Marck and Hornes), as well as Saint Lambert and Saint James. In a side-chapel is a beautiful gilded wooden sculpture of Our-Lady of Saint James from 1523. FROM THE ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: We are now at Liege, one of the most flourishing towns in Belgium. From 1793 to 1814, it was the capital of the French department of Ourthe. It stands in a coal district; hence, as might be expected, it is a manufacturing town, sending forth heaps of fire-arms to all parts of the continent. It has been called the Birmingham of Belgium; and its blackened houses, narrow dirty streets, begrimed pavements, smoky atmosphere, well entitle it to the distinguished cognomen. In the suburb of St. Leonhard there is a cannon foundry, and there are also steam-engine and spinning-machine factories. It is altogether a busy place, and no doubt would continue to be so, were the coal-supply commensurate to its industrial demands. Before the Revolution, Holland received her coal-supply from Belgium, but the home consumption of this mineral has increased, to such an extent, that the Belgian mines are not sufficiently abundant to meet the supply required for her own manufactures; and. A law was passed, some years ago, authorising the importation of English coals from Newcastle. In the immediate neighbourhood, of Liege the mines are worked on scientific principles, and the galleries of some of them are even carried under the streets of the town, as well as under the bed of the river Mouse, at the junction of which with the Ourthe it is built. Like some other city populations in this part of the continent, the inhabitants of Liege were of a proud, independent, turbulent, and. unruly disposition, and. frequently gave no small degree of trouble to those to whom they owed their allegiance, and. by whom they were governed. Philip de Gomines tells us that they frequently rose against Charles the Bold of Burgundy, as well as against their bishops, who were either countenanced or supported by him, or were his allies. Sir Walter Scott, in his novel of "Quentin Durward," gives an animated description of the scene of the murder of Louis de Bourbon, one of their bishops supported by Charles. The scene is laid in the bishop's castle of Schonwalt, situated about ten miles from the town, and is represented with all the graphic spirit, force, and reality of which the Minstrel of the North was so perfect a master. The insubordination of the Liegois, however, did not always go unpunished. After Charles had conquered at the battle of St. Trond, he abridged their privileges, and deprived them of their banners. He also refused to accept from them the keys of the gates of their town, forcing them to level a portion of its defensive walls, and fill up the moat with it, that he might thereby be enabled to enter. He also commanded the whole of the fortifications to be razed, in the expectation that such severity and humiliation would effectually curb, for the future, the spirit of revolt with which these citizens were animated. This was in 1467, but by the following year, all the punishment to which they had been subjected seems to have been forgotten, as, at the instigation of the emissaries of Louis XI., they rose in arms again, seized the person of their bishop in his castle at Tongres, and carried him a prisoner to Liege. The churches in Liege are numerous, and some of them are worthy of attention. The most notable is the church of St. James, which belongs to the first quarter of the 16th century. "Its pier-arches are elegantly fringed, it possesses wide windows, filled with painted glass, elegantly mullioned, net-work screens, reeded pillars, branching into rich tracery spreading over the roof, studded with embossed ornaments, containing within them gay arabescoes; medallions of saints, sovereigns, and prelates innumerable, all most gorgeously, yet harmoniously, painted and gilt." The painted glass in the choir is considered among the most perfect specimens of the art in Europe. The other churches deserving inspection are the cathedral, formerly the collegiate church of St. Paul, St. Bartholomew's, St. Denis, principally in the Romanesque style; and St. Croix, with a Moorish tower. ABOUT THE ARTIST: Thomas Allom (1804-1872) was born in London, England on 13th March 1804. He was articled to Francis Goodwin, an architect in 1819. He was to become a founder member of the R.I.B.A. (Royal Institute of British Architects - which is still the premier institution today). He is best know for his topographical drawings, so many of which were engraved on steel & appeared in many of the travel books of the time. He travelled extensively, not just in the UK & Europe, but further afield, covering such countries as Turkey & China. Collections of his work can be found in the British Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum. SIZE: Image size is 5 inches by 7 inches. Print size is 9 1/2 inches by 12 1/2 inches including white borders. CONDITION: Condition is excellent. Bright and clean. Blank on reverse. SHIPPING: Buyers to pay shipping/handling, domestic orders receives priority mail, international orders receive regular mail. Please note: the terms used in our auctions for engraving, heliogravure, lithograph, print, plate, photogravure etc. are ALL prints on paper, NOT blocks of steel or wood. "ENGRAVINGS", the term commonly used for these paper prints, were the most common method in the 1700s and 1800s for illustrating old books, and these paper prints or "engravings" were inserted into the book with a tissue guard frontis, usually on much thicker quality rag stock paper, although many were also printed and issued as loose stand alone prints. So this auction is for an antique paper print(s), probably from an old book, of very high quality and usually on very thick rag stock paper. EXTREMELY RARE IN THIS EXCELLENT CONDITION!
