Description: Beautiful vintage statue of the famous Charlie Chaplin. Sir Charles Spencer "Charlie" Chaplin, Jr. KBE (16 April 1889 – 25 December 1977) was an English actor, comedian, director, composer, screenwriter, film director, editor, and musician. Chaplin is considered the leading actor of the silent film era, notable for his use of mime and slapstick comedy. He is known for his films The Immigrant, The Boy, The Gold Rush (which he considered his best film), The Circus, City Lights, Modern Times, The Great Dictator, Limelight, A King in New York and The Countess of Hong Kong. Influenced by the work of predecessors Max Linder, Georges Méliès, D. W. Griffith, Louis and Auguste Lumière, and sharing work with Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford, he was inspired by mime, pantomime and the slapstick genre. He influenced a large number of comedians and filmmakers, such as Federico Fellini, The Three Stooges, Peter Sellers, Milton Berle, Marcel Marceau, Jacques Tati, Rowan Atkinson, Johnny Depp, Michael Jackson, Sacha Baron Cohen, Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton, Roberto Gómez Bolaños, and Renato Aragão. He is considered by some critics to be the greatest film artist of all time and one of the "fathers of cinema", along with the Lumière Brothers, Georges Méliès and D.W. Griffith. Charlie Chaplin acted, directed, wrote, produced and financed his own films, being strongly influenced by a predecessor, the French comedian Max Linder, to whom he dedicated one of his films. His career in the entertainment business spanned more than 75 years, from his first performances as a child in UK theaters during the Victorian Era until his death at the age of 88. His public and private life encompassed adulation and controversy. Together with Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, and D. W. Griffith, Chaplin founded United Artists in 1919. His main and most famous character was The Tramp, known as Charlot in Europe and also known as Carlitos or "The Tramp" in Brazil. It consists of a poor wanderer who possesses all the refined manners and dignity of a gentleman, wearing a frayed black tailcoat, worn trousers and shoes wider than his number, a bowler hat or top hat, a bamboo cane, and—his personal brand—a small moustache. He was also a talented chess player and even faced the American champion Samuel Reshevsky. In 2008, in a review of the book Chaplin: A Life, Martin Sieff writes: "Chaplin was not only 'great', he was gigantic. In 1915, he burst a war-torn world by bringing the gift of comedy, laughter, and relief while he himself was split in half by World War I. For the next 55 years, through the Great Depression and the rise of Hitler, he remained in employment. He was bigger than anyone. It is doubtful that any other individual has given more entertainment, pleasure, and relief to so many human beings when they needed it most." For his unparalleled contribution to the development of the seventh art, Chaplin is the most honored filmmaker of all time, being decorated during his lifetime by the British (Knight of the British Empire) and French (Légion d'Honneur) governments, by the University of Oxford (Doctor Honoris Causa) and by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of the United States (Special Oscar for lifetime achievement, in 1972).
