Description: The Mercury dime is a ten-cent coin struck by the United States Mint from late 1916 to 1945. Designed by Adolph Weinman and also referred to as the Winged Liberty Head dime, it gained its common name because the obverse depiction of a young Liberty, identifiable by her winged Phrygian cap, was confused with the Roman god Mercury. Weinman is believed to have used Elsie Stevens, the wife of lawyer and poet Wallace Stevens, as a model. The coin's reverse depicts a fasces, symbolizing unity and strength, and an olive branch, signifying peace. The Mercury dime was introduced in 1916 as part of a larger effort to update the designs of United States coins. The previous dime design, the Barber dime, had been in use since 1892. The Mercury dime was well-received by the public and quickly became one of the most popular coin designs in the United States. The Mercury dime was struck in silver until 1964, when the United States government discontinued the use of silver in its coins. After 1964, Mercury dimes were struck in cupronickel, a copper-nickel alloy. The Mercury dime was discontinued in 1945 and was replaced by the Roosevelt dime. However, the Mercury dime remains a popular coin among collectors. Many Mercury dimes are in high demand, and some examples can fetch high prices.
