Description: Bearberry, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, Seeds Hardy, Adaptable, Evergreen Ground Cover, Medicinal, Edible Fruits and Leaves, Attracts Birds, Wildlife Food, Cold, Drought and Salt Tolerant Bearberry is an extremely cold hardy, slow growing, evergreen ground cover that grows generally 6 to 12 inches high and 3 to 6 feet wide. Over time, the Bearberry can form a dense mat, slowly spreading to cover a very large area to 15 feet in diameter. Leaves are small, glossy and dark green that turn red in winter. Bark is an attractive red-gray and exfoliates with age. Small white to pink, urn-shaped flowers bloom in April thru May and are followed by bright red edible fruits in August. The fruits are eaten by birds and other wildlife, including bears, (Uva-ursi means bear's grape). The green leaves and red berries are often used for Christmas decorations. The dried, pulverized leaves were used as smoking tobacco by the Indians. A tea is also made from the dried leaves. Fruit becomes sweeter when cooked. The fruit can also be used to make a cooling drink or used for preserves etc. It can be dried and stored for later use.
