Description: Original lead bullets excavated from the Spotsylvania and Wilderness Battlefields near Fredericksburg, Virginia. The battles were the start of General Grant’s 1864 “Overland Campaign” to take Richmond, Virginia. The bullet at center is for a Federal .58 Springfield, the fired .58 bullet at left could have been used by either side. The fired bullet at right is a Confederate .57 for the Enfield Rifle. They all used a paper cartridge to hold the black powder. The white color or patina is due to oxidation in the ground. The scene was reproduced from a photograph taken by G.O. Brown in 1865 of the Confederate trenches near the “Bloody Angle” on the Spotsylvania Battlefield. Spotsylvania was the second battle in 1864 between General Grant’s “Army of the Potomac” and General Lee’s “Army of Northern Virginia” after the Battle of the Wilderness. It was the first engagement in what would be called the Overland Campaign. The Battle of Spotsylvania Court House was the second major battle in Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's 1864 Overland Campaign of the Civil War. Following the bloody but inconclusive Battle of the Wilderness, Grant's army disengaged from General Robert E. Lee's army and moved to the southeast. Elements of Lee's army beat the Union army to the critical crossroads of Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, and began entrenching. Fighting occurred on and off from May 8 through May 21, 1864. The artifacts come as shown in an 8” x 12” “Riker” style glass top case which can be opened by taking the pins out. The artifacts are just pressed in, not glued. Riker cases can be hung on a wall, but are best used on a stand. All of the artifacts are guaranteed to be original as stated. A hand signed and dated “Certificate of Authenticity” will be issued by Collectors Frame with a photograph and description of the items purchased. Please see our "About” for more information on the framing and artifacts.
