Description: MAKER: BARBARA WILLIS <> North Hollywood, CA DESCRIPTION: This listing is for a rare Hawaiian boy planter /bookend produced by Barbara Willis. Its one-half of a "boy-girl" set that dates from the mid-1940's. The tragic events at Pearl Harbor in 1941, and the resulting war effort, led to a fascination with Hawaii and other little-known exotic places among the Americans public. Many California Pottery makers took advantage of this growing interest and produced items like this for their eager consumption. Willis may have been a little ahead of the curve, as this set and a similar set of wall-pockets didn't do that well, which makes them very hard to find today. Heavy item!NOTE: An archival photo of this set and the set of wall vases is shown in my Barbara Willis book on page 22.IMPORTANT: Please read my "SHIPPING & PAYMENT information below. DATE: Circa 1945 DIMENSIONS: About 12 1/2" in height MARKS: The genuine hand-incised signature of "Barbara Willis" on the bottom as shown CONDITION: Very good. This poor boy accidently lost his head at some point but the break was surprising clean. On close examination, I found no missing flakes of clay and whoever mended the piece did a superb job. Apparently at the same time, a small amount of crackle glaze on the backside of the figure (just below the shoulder) was dislodged and also put back in place. There were a few small gaps there, but I managed to repair the area and it, like the mended neck, is hardly noticeable now (see photos.). No other notable issues.
