Description: "Dearie, You're not washing your face?" Signed by Barbara Shermund 1899-1978. Original New Yorker Magazine Cartoon published April 2, 1927. The humor is this Shermund cartoon requires alittle historical knowledge of the Roaring Twenties. In that time period there was lye in the soap. Using it on your face resulted in burns on the face! This cartoon was painted on a large paper panel and has not been cut down for framing. In the 20s it had to be done this size to be reproduced. This changed by 1930 to regular art paper. The large "R" is Harold Ross's approval of the cartoon. Everything printed in the New Yorker till 1930 had to have the R for approval. See page 61 of James Thurber's "My years with Ross" when Thurber fooled Ross. Thurber put Rs on five of his cartoons Ross turned down and they were published. The Hundred Anniversary of the New Yorker is next year 2025, so the "R" on Shermund's cartoon is an added piece history to this Historical Cartoon! Barbara Shermund created the humor and artwork in her 600 New Yorker cartoons and 9 covers from 1925 to 1942. "Tell you about Story Where the Bad Girl Wins-The Life and Art of Barbara Shermund " by Caitlin McGurk was published this November. A favorite cartoon enriched with history!
