They allow for easier tracking of narrow blades and adjust to the blade on a cam. In order to adjust the bearing into the blade, you just loosen the black setscrew on the side of the unit and cam the bearings into the blade until they are riding on the back kerf. Then they ride like a tire down an interstate highway! Good for up to a 5/8" blade width.
