Bahia de Alcudia Golf Course Mallorca Vintage Print Erwin Hubert Austrian Artist

Description: Up for sale is a full color vintage print of a golf course scene, set in front of a beautiful bay, on the Spanish island of Mallorca. It was painted by an Austrian born artist who lived in Mallorca and whose work did much to popularize the destination as a tourist attraction. Total dimensions of the print (including the border) are: 27.5 cms wide (about 10.8 inches wide) by 21 cms tall (about 8.3 inches tall). The dimensions of the actual scene (excluding the border) are: 19.3 cms wide (about 7.6 inches wide) by 13.5 cms tall (about 5.3 inches tall). In the bottom left corner of the border is printed the location: "Bahia de Alcudia". Alcudia is a municipality in the northeastern portion of Mallorca (part of the Balearic Islands and Spain). The area has been inhabited since the Bronze Age. The Romans established a settlement - camp, Pollentia, near the current town of Alcudia. The current "ancient" walled city dates to the 13th and 14th century. Tourism to Alcudia (and to Mallorca in general) did not begin in earnest until the 1920s and remained relatively modest in scale until the 1970s. Artist Erwin Hubert (1883 - 1963) was born in Vienna and first arrived in Mallorca just prior to World War I, when he served as secretary to Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria-Tuscany. In 1920, after several years back in Austria working for a bank, he returned to Mallorca where he would remain for the rest of his life. His primary medium was watercolor, and it is likely that this print was from a watercolor painting. Hubert's work most often appears on vintage postcards and travel brochures. The piece I am selling is an actual print which can be framed, if desired. Hubert's name appears at the bottom left corner of the scene, in small block letters, which is how he typically signed his paintings. There is no date.
