Description: This is the famous P-38 flown by Lighting Ace, Jack Ilfrey. Enjoy his story under the artwork. Let me tell you about Jack. Jack was a blazing Ace in North Africa. He returned to America to train new pilots. Jack then went to Europe. He shot down several more German fighters. Jack was shot down behind enemy lines where he be-friended a French Family. The family gave him a change of clothes and then they forged medical note from a doctor. The note was in French. It said, "This is, Jock, he is retarded. He can understand you, but he cannot speak. Please take care of Jock." The French gave Jack/Jock a bicycle and the doctor's note and he rode off towards the American lines. Jack was stopped several times by the Germans. One time they got him to help evacuate wounded Germans to a hospital and then they thanked him. Jack made his way to the American lines where he was rescued and reunited with his squadron. This guy was my friend and what a great guy he was...he was fearless! He also thought it was funny to act retarded to amuse the Germans! The guy was an actor! He got away! Jack told me that he was putting wounded Germans in a wheel borrow and running down the street with them! He said that he felt safe with the Germans. They fed and took care of him! This is History! Jack ended the war with 7.5 aerial victories. Jack also damaged many more Germans! He earned the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Air Medal with 13 Oak Leaf Clusters. Print sizes are 12x18" Published on heavy museum paper. Jack has autographed my prints in pencil. I have ONE MORE STORY! Jack landed his P-51 Mustang under enemy gunfire to rescue a fellow pilot who had been shot down. His friend landed safely. And then under terrible danger Jack landed next to him, got his friend into the cockpit in his lap and flew him home! This guy was a true American Hero! His friend could have been captured...and been killed or treated as a P.O.W.! I am an aviation artist and historian.
