Description: Autograph Album Belonging to an 1883 Graduate of Los Angeles High School Title: Autograph Album Belonging to an 1883 Graduate of Los Angeles High School Publication: Mainly Los Angeles: 1880s Description: Autograph album binding of purple morocco leather measuring 7.5 x 4.5", titled "Autographs" to front cover, with the name "Della Baker" gilt stamped to rear cover, 73 pages of which contain inscriptions to "Della" by young men and women. An autograph album belonging to Della Baker, an 1883 graduate of Los Angeles High School, the oldest public high school in Southern California (the first graduating class was in 1875). The vast majority of the entries were gathered from friends in Los Angeles, mostly between 1882 and 1884 (with a couple from later in the decade as well), including many members of LAHS and its 1883 graduating class. There are also eight entries from Tucson, Arizona Territory, an inscription from Papillon, Nebraska, and an inscription from Virginia City, Montana. Most of the entries contain advice and autograph sentiments, up to a paragraph or so, with one entry running to two pages. A nice document of the early years of Los Angeles High School. Bit of damp staining to right hand margin of pages and fore edge, wear to covers with hinges cracked and tearing to spine leather.
