Description: This is an authentic, rare and ancient Spanish coin dating back to the 16th century, specifically between 1580 and 1591 during the reign of King Philip II. This coin has a denomination of 2 Maravedis and was minted in Spain. The obverse of the coin depicts a castle for the Spanish city of Castile. The reverse shows a lion for the Spanish city of Leon. By decree of the reigning King of Spain, from 1603 to 1659, there were a reported six series of counterstamping the copper coinage in order to increase their value and thus raise revenue: In 1603 the 2 & 4 maravedis have their value tripled In 1636 the pure copper maravedis (not the billon ones) also have their value tripled In 1641-42 the 2, 4 and 8 maravedis are increased in value to 6,8 and 12 In 1651-52 the 1 and 2 maravedis are quadrupled in value In 1654-53: the 4 maravedis are doubled to 8 Philip II, also known as Philip the Prudent, was King of Spain from 1556, King of Portugal from 1580, and King of Naples and Sicily from 1554 until his death in 1598. He was also jure uxoris King of England and Ireland from his marriage to Queen Mary I in 1554 until her death in 1558. It is a piece of Medieval history, over 450 years old, and a true collector's item for any coin enthusiast or history buff. It is well worn but it’s intricate design and unique features make it a valuable addition to any collection. C364
