At Milford High School Long was a multisport athlete lettering 3 years in football, basketball, and track and field. He set state records in shot put and discus. Although Long never played football until he was 15 years old he became great making the Scholastic Coach All-America Team as a senior. Long went on to Villanova University where he played all 4 years beginning at tight end, defensive line, and nose guard. Upon moving to defensive end Howie excelled earning All-East Team and honorable mention All-American. Incidentally, Long boxed for Villanova winning Northern Collegiate Heavyweight Boxing Champion! Howie Long was drafted in the 2nd Round of the 1981 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders.
