Description: Nicely carved Eskimo Art piece in serpentine green stone. An abstraction of a figure riding a sled with sled dog. Sorry. Sled dog is missing from piece. I enjoy collecting pieces made by a human being. As we move deeper into the tech world, we are losing traditions. Fewer people are learning carving skills from elders. As a person who enjoys reading about archaeology, when I see a piece like this I think of the nature of artifacts, and the story behind them. The Igloo Tag Trademark is an internationally recognized symbol of authenticity for Intuit visual arts since 1958. This piece (5.25 inches long, 4.75 inches high) bears the original Igloo Tag, carving number, inscribed artist’s signature in Inuit. This label with “Eskimo art esquimao” printed dates from 1970. There is a story that the carving market was born shortly after the end of World War II, after a large local Intuit event, that featured the art work of native locals, it caught the attention of some non native attendees, who recognized the astonishing talent, and helped support them. In my research, early carving examples portray traditional Eskimo themes. The figure performs a task useful in their community, for example, this carving offered shows an Eskimo in a sled (and a sled dog - missing from piece). Why buy this piece? If you enjoy Intuit carvings this is a nice example of the carvings early artists produced. What emerges is a time-capsule when outside contact had not completely affected their nature and simplicity. Condition: Serpentine is a softer stone and is prone to marks and chips.
