ARTWORK BACKGROUNDIn 1967, Paul Krassner published Mad Magazine's artist, Wally Wood’s parody as the centerfold for his satirical magazine, The Realist, then printed as a black-&-white graphic. After the magazine's publishing, the original artwork was hand colored by an ex-Disney employee. Wally Wood began as assistant on Will Eisner's The Spirit and by 1949 was handling pencils and inks for romance comics. Wood collaborated with Harry Harrison on Rangeland Romances in early 1950's (including providing voluptuous cowgirls and pin-ups). He also helped make E. C. and MAD huge hits in the 1950's. Wood drew for all the major houses: D C, Marvel, Gold Key, Fawcett, Fox Features, Archie, perhaps best known for his sci-fi, in which earthy earth women, bug-eyed-monsters, laser-wielding spacemen, and sharply shadowed spaceships jumped off covers and pages, but he also worked in everything from war stories to westerns, crime to celebrity (Dorothy Lamour, Judy Canova), super heroes to zombies.
