Description: This is a beautiful set of vintage beads that include both Venetians and Bohemians. The Venetians were made by adding millefiori cane slices to a base glass in black - though black didn't exist then - it's actually the deepest of blues. The millefiori canes were separately made from rolling sky blue glass onto white glass, then onto brick red glass, then onto cadmium sulphide yellow glass. The final cane was broken into lengths, finished off into slices, then pressed onto the original "black" glass. In this case, the bead maker came up with a very pretty combination of colors. The milles here have paddled ends to make it easy to string into a wristlet or anklet very easy. I added shorter and more narrow "Russian blues" that weren't really made or traded in Russia though they have been found in the shores of NW Canada. They were made in the 1800s in Gablonz, Bohemia and in this instance, they're less common than those that are available elsewhere on the used market because there are TWO layers of blue glass around the perforation (where the mandrill was) - a light blue glass was used and surrounded by a darker blue. I've never read whether that was an intentional act or a cause of heat, but a translucent layer of blue glass was added to the outside, before the final faceting and breaking of the cane into beads. The patina on all these beads is EXCELLENT and there are no chips This loop if perfect for design and better, IMO, for collecting. But hey, string them with elastic thread and make the assemble your go to bracelet. This is history. Note: the books in one of the photos are not for sale; the snap is from only one section of my reference library. Be sure to look at my other items because I combine as many items as I can safely pack in one box. It saves a bundle on postage, especially on beads and other small items. I charge no fees other than what the USPS charges for postage, regardless how many separate listings are purchased by you. If the total weight makes the USPS charge more, then I do pass that along to you. I typically choose to uses USPS Ground Advantage but if I think the small things are worth it, I’ll charge Priority; you can always ask that I adjust the invoice. Please realize that the USPS doesn’t recognize “fragile” anymore, but I pack very well. 3 different clerks have told me “we don’t have a fragile class of mail.” Sorry, no returns. Here's a note about my bead collection - it includes examples from vintage to ancient, dating from the 1950s back to 22,000 BCE. Documentation is reference to established research through published literature, journals, books, photographs, and scientists. Holding antique beads make me think of the hands of generations, their meaning as talismans, religious protection, their use as money, their origins, and the people who held them before me. If you want to see if I have others not yet listed, send a message through eBay and I'll list them and let you know when I list them. I'm not permitted to do "side deals."
