Description: "Atlas of the Historical Geography of the United States" is an 11.25"x14.5" hardcover written by Charles O. Paullin, edited by John K. Wright and published jointly by Carnegie Institution of Washington (Publication 401) and the American Geographical Society of New York in 1932. There are xv + 162 pages of text followed by 166 plates (some of which cover 2 pages) containing various types of historical maps. The book is in good condition, with no dust jacket. The cloth boards show edge wear, frayed extremities, light soiling, various scuffs, scratches, small stains and spots, a couple small holes in the cloth at the spine. There are several small pencil marks to the ffep, a small stain to the title page, and the interior is age-toned. The pages are a bit wavy at the top and a marginal moisture stain is visible at the top of some of them. The binding is sturdy. Synopsis: The atlas was originally published in 1932 by Charles O. Paullin and John K. Wright and remains “one of the most impressive and useful atlases in American history.” It includes nearly seven hundred maps, many often grouped on one page, across 166 plates. The maps cover a broad array of historical issues of interest at the time of its publication: exploration and settlement, disputes over boundaries, women's suffrage, agriculture, and the distribution of wealth. The authors did their best to show change over time by creating a series of maps on the same topic spanning decades or centuries.
