A portion of the background can be seen for a few seconds when the flying fish planes enter the city to warn the populace and the camera looks back to focus on the approaching waves. Tom Shannon worked at Disney for over 20 years as a layout artist in story development and was tasked with designing the visual elements of several environments in the Atlantis movie including the overall look of the city. Tom Shannon's job was normally to develop visual details including those in characters, backgrounds, and sequences before the final script was approved and animation began. He worked on many Disney films including Aladdin, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Beauty and the Beast, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Lion King, and Mulan.
