Description: These artful earthenware bowls come from a peak moment at Longwy, a French ceramic center. Longwy produced table services for the noble families of France — including the emperor Napoleon I himself — and it adopted Art Deco in the early 20th century. Longwy’s Deco enameled earthenware drew from East Asia, Egypt and Persia; the peacock relief at the bottom of these bowls reflects that influence. The Atelier Primavera line here was developed for Printemps dept store, the shopping destination of preference for Paris’ upper classes. These bowls are in excellent vintage condition and were clearly only used for display. The bowls have a diameter of 7" and stretch to 9.5" including the handles. They are 2.5" deep. Because of the relief decor, they’re not practical for service use with soups, salads or other foods. They’d be great for display or for offering snacks like peanuts or confections. And for movie buffs, the rich Deco design here is of a kind with contemporary European fine art silent cinema like that of Eisenstein’s historical films, Lang’s German epics and American films like D.W. Griffith’s Intolerance. Please check the photos to verify the excellent condition of these bowls. And feel free to contact me with any questions.
