Atahualpa first grew up in El Campo de la Cruz, north of Buenos Aires. Then he spent the rest of his childhood in Fortín Roca, another village in the Pampas, where his father was station master. From the age of six, he learned to play the violin and the guitar. When his father died in 1921, he decided to become an artist and practice various trades to earn a living. He then travels the wide open spaces of his country, discovering the miserable reality in which the people of the countryside live, Indian or Métis. He becomes their spokesperson in his first compositions - Camino del Indio, Nostalgia de Tucumán. In 1928, journalist in Buenos Aires, he met the anthropologist Alfred Métraux, with whom he explored Bolivia. His intimate knowledge of beings, landscapes, ancestral customs and the Indian soul feeds his inspiration.In 1948, after having been imprisoned twice for belonging to the Communist Party under the authoritarian regime of Juan Perón, he went into exile in France. He made his debut in 1950, presented by Édith Piaf at the Théâtre de l'Athénée, in Paris. He acquired a certain notoriety and he became friends with Louis Aragon, Paul Éluard, Picasso, Rafael Alberti.
