Astronaut Deke Slayton signed letter re his love for the Packers & the Ice Bowl

Description: DEKE SLAYTON, NASA PILOT AND MERCURY SEVEN ASTRONAUT, WRITES OF HIS LOVE OF FOOTBALL: “I AM POSITIVELY A FAN!” DONALD KENT “DEKE” SLAYTON (1924-1993). Slayton was a pilot, engineer, and NASA official, and one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts. TLS. 1 pg. 8” x 10”. May 9, 1978. Houston, Texas. A typed letter signed “D.K. Slayton” to “Mr. George Sullivan”: “Regarding tour question about my interest in professional football. I am positively a fan! Being raised in Wisconsin I am still partial to the Green Bay Packers and probably the game that stands out most in my mind was the Green Bay/Dallas game played in -13° weather which Green Bay barely won at the last minute. I hope this answers your questions”. Deke Slayton had been selected as one of NASA’s original astronauts, the Mercury Seven. However, when a heart condition grounded him, Slayton pivoted to leadership roles, becoming NASA's first Chief of the Astronaut Office and Director of Flight Crew Operations, responsible for NASA crew assignments. Finally cleared to fly, Slayton became the docking module pilot of the 1975 Apollo–Soyuz Test Project (ASTP), the first crewed international space mission between the United States and the Soviet Union. At the time of this letter, he was managing the approach and landing tests (ALT) for the new space shuttle program, and he would do so until his 1982 retirement. As Slayton mentioned, he was born in Wisconsin, specifically on a farm near Leon, Wisconsin. The game he referred to is the famous “Ice Bowl” 1967 NFL Championship game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Green Bay Packers. With an average wind chill around −48 °F, this horrible weather led to the NFL pre-emptively selecting cities for its championship game, the Super Bowl, to prevent another Ice Bowl. This game was thus the last cold-weather championship game until Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014, and even that was 49°F.The letter is on official NASA stationery for the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. It is in excellent condition. TERMS AND CONDITIONS My name is Stuart Lutz and I am a full time dealer of autographs, letters, documents and historic manuscripts.
