AS-IS D R Barton Rochester NY 5/16" center bead wood molding plane fully boxed

Description: You are bidding on one AS-IS D R Barton 5/16" center bead wood molding plane as pictured. There are condition issues, so please keep reading. I wouldn't have listed this, except that the size is not at all common and the maker is desireable. It is marked faintly with "D R BARTON ROCHESTER NY" in his usual oval border, and with owner "C CYLLENBACK" twice on the front end, and with "5/16" and "23" and CYLLENBACK again on the back end.Overall length is a bit over 9-9/16". The profile is a 5/16" center bead with one full boxing strip. David R Barton and his successors were prolific plane and tool makers in Rochester, New York, beginning in 1832. The company was bought by Mack & Company in 1874, and they continued to use the D R BARTON name into the 1930's. Please see the book American Wooden Planes 5th Edition for more information about them. It notes that Barton was in a variety of partnerships mostly early in his career. A prior owner has cut back the body on the lower right side on the outside of the full boxing, and then filled it back in with a rough strip of wood. There are two holes that go all the way through the plane, presumably to mount a fence, at least 4 nails holding the added wood strip going up from the bottom, and numerous nail holes on the other side of the boxing also going up from the bottom with at least 2 nails sunk into the wood on that side. The throat has been opened up a bit, and both edges of the boxing have quite a few chips especially towards the rear. Condition would otherwise be good, although it has quite a few stains. There are a variety of minor scratches and dings in the wood. The plane is reasonably straight if you sight down the profile. The iron and the wedge both appear to be original to the plane. The Post Office now has several prices increases during each year, raising a few things but not everything at each increase. And they now raise their rates during the Holidays, which means early October to late January. Their big increases are in January, timed to start at the end of the Holiday rates, and this year is no exception. And it's not just the postage rates, the insurance charges and the delivery signature charges have also gone up. There is now a surcharge for Priority Mail packages over 20" long, and another for Priority Mail packages over 30" long, because those longer packages won't fit in their automatic machines. And the Post Office has discontinued the Regional Flat Rate boxes, which were often less expensive for certain sizes and weights. I try to pick the best shipping option for each listing, based both on what is the least expensive and on what I think is needed to protect the item. If the value is $250 or over, eBay requires your signature at delivery for the buyer and seller protections to be in effect.SALES TAX: Interstate sales tax is now the reality on all the major selling websites including eBay.
