Mine actually came directly from Costa Rica many years ago. The name derives from their tall stems that look like bamboo. This stunning, easy-to-grow bamboo orchid, flowers throughout the year with heaviest blooming in spring and summer. The flowers are fragrant, attracting butterflies and bees. Each stalk has only one flower at a time, and will continue to produce a flower every time one dies. They are flowering machines! It is interesting because you look at the flower spike at the top and you can count how many flowers the plant has produced! When it is almost done having flowers, it will start producing pups at the top of the stalk in between the leaves. This is what you will be receiving. The pup will be a good size, with no roots, and about 4-6 inches. I see best results with placing the pup in a glass of water outside in the sun and waiting a few days to see roots. Then all you have to do is plant it in dirt and watch it grow. These grow roots pretty fast once you put them in water, like in about 7 days, and quite possibly will start rooting in the box on the way to you! I find these orchids to be super easy and really don't give them much care. They occasionally need some help standing upright, so I just throw a stake in the ground and clip the stalk to it. When mine get too tall and are done flowering (about 6-8 feet tall), I cut them down to the ground and let the smaller ones grow up. They are constantly producing new plants at ground level also. In my opinion it is impossible to kill this plant! This one loves the sun. Bamboo orchids are terrestrial orchids, also called ground orchids. Terrestrial orchids grow best in light, rich, dense organic well-draining soil. If you grow a bamboo orchid in a pot, use a potting mix of equal parts of fine fir bark, sphagnum moss and sand. Before planting a bamboo orchid outside, work partially decomposed pine bark, well-rotted compost and peat into the soil until the organic matter makes up 60 to 70 percent of the planting mix. It needs to be in a well-draining soil. For best results apply an organic or slow-release fertilizer every six to eight months. I have it thriving in all sun conditions, but it especially loves full sun. This auction is for a pup similar to the ones in the last 2 photos. The pup will be a healthy pup, about 4 inches or more, with many leaves. I have not rooted them yet, so all you need to do is stick it in water and it will root in about 7 days. This plant roots fast once it is separated from the mother plant and then you can put it in soil. It is very easy to grow. I swear you cannot kill this one, so you can't screw up! Plants will grow to to around the size seen in the photos, and even bigger if you let them! Your orchid may arrive with brown tips on the lower leaves, but that is totally normal. The lower leaves always die off as the top of the plant keeps growing and getting taller. In many cases, some of my 6-8 foot tall orchids have 4 feet or more of bare stalk but super healthy leaves at the top of the plant. Some have green leaves on most of the plant. It really just depends on the amount of sun and water you give it! Plants will be shipped no root or bare root with a covering to retain its freshness with moisture.
