Description: Found at an estate sale, this colorful vintage 12" x 16" framed impressionist oil painting on canvas shows a cheerful scene of houses at a beach. A lateen-rigged sailboat, common in parts of the Mediterranean, lends an exotic touch. The red-roofed, sunlit houses with blue shutters also speak of the Mediterranean. I think the stakes in the foreground are for mooring the sailboat. This painting is framed in an ornate 18.25” x 22.5” gilt wood and gesso frame. The image area is 11.5” x 15.5”. An Artistic Interiors certificate of authenticity is on the back. The second photo shows a 12” ruler for scale. As is unfortunately all too often the case at estate sales, I wasn't able to learn anything about the age or history of this lovely painting, which I would guess to be at least 40 years old. The Artistic Interiors certificate of authenticity on the back of the canvas documents that this is a certified original oil painting with a certification number of 312085. I would describe this painting as having museum-quality framing because of the wooden wedges or keys at the corners of the stretcher bars to allow adjusting the tension of the canvas in response to humidity. Over the years the fabric inner border of the frame has started to come loose and one of the wedges has been lost (see photos). The signature on this painting seems to me atypical for one signed “Rossini” and it’s possible that more than one artist signed simply “Rossini”. On this painting the signature is written neatly in cursive with white paint rather than the usual block letters, which are often in red. This framed picture weighs 3 lbs. 12 oz., making it easy to hang.
