The brooch was made by double wall construction, meaning the top and bottom were made separately and then soldered. A brooch that is marked STERLING has both the top and bottom made in sterling silver. A brooch marked STERLING TOP or STERLING FRONT means that only the front/ top is sterling silver. The back is german / nickel silver (an alloy, contains no silver). Double wall construction is a time- and labor-intensive procedure. The solid back piece must be shaped to exactly match the front and then the 2 pieces are soldered together (which is why you will see the small vent holes that allow the heat to escape) and then smoothed. Because it is so labor-intensive you almost always find STERLING TOP/FRONT pieces without too many cut-outs. This brooch is unusual in that there are 3 cut-outs. Great condition with no dings, dents or scratches. The original c-clasp is present. Marked STERLING TOP. Has a hook from which a watch or locket would have been suspended.
