Description: These "Guest of Honor" pieces have a simple rope design along the edge, but the Art Deco period is obvious in the step design on the ends of the handles and in the elegant open design of the cake server. This flatware was used to serve my family when we were guests at a dear friend's home. She was a well-known and loved educator in my hometown, and had a school was named after her. My son then used the set for many years after it was given to him. Now it is time for someone else to enjoy it for years to come! The Holmes & Edwards Silver Company began in 1882 to producer low priced plated flatware with its own blanks or plating those of other producers. The quality of their product improved when they got the invention patents (December 9, 1884, and March 2, 1886) obtained by William A. Warner of Syracuse. He developed a way of inlaying blocks of sterling silver at wear points on the backs of spoons and fork before plating them. Warner was responsible for Holmes and Edwards receiving a gold medal at the 1893 Colombian Exposition in Chicago. In 1956, the trademark, "SILVER INLAID" was changed to "HOLMES & EDWARDS DEEPSILVER" and to "INTERNATIONAL DEEPSILVER" in 1960. In 1972, silver inlaid manufacturing ceased and was later marketed by Wallace International Silversmiths, Inc.
