Etc. -------- Front cover illustration : " The Swimming Hole " ( 1884-85, detail ), by Thomas Eakins (1844-1916), an oil on canvas painting depicting six men swimming naked in a lake. It is considered a masterpiece of American painting. Art historian Doreen Bolger described it as "perhaps Eakins most accomplished rendition of the nude figure ." Before the mid-19th century, the subject of the nude male figure in Western art had long been reserved for classical subject matter. In the 19th century, it was not unusual for boys and men to swim without clothing in public, but there was no precedent for this subject in American painting. In America at this time, compositions featuring female nudes were exhibited in saloons rather than public galleries ; in The Swimming Hole Eakins altered the gender and presented the male swimmer as fine art.
