Description: U.S. Military in the Arctic DVD " width="100%" height="90" border="0"> U.S. Military in the Arctic DVD DVD Video Description Loose Cannon is proud to preserve the USA's military history via its unique DVD film collections. Using a combination of U.S. Dept. of Defense archive films, combat footage, and period newsreels of the time, each film features actual wartime footage and or first-person accounts from those that were there. Shortly after World War 2 the U.S. military saw the need to prepare for operations in the Arctic Circle area in an effort to counter Russian incursions as well as the 'Bombers over the Pole' threat. To do so they need to create a network of bases and early warning stations in very cold and northern environments. These films depict those efforts and the U.S. Can-Do attitude that prevailed. (Also: See our 'DEW LINE' DVD here on eBay for more info on the amazing effort to build the radar warning network in the Arctic in record time.) Of note is the film about Camp Century, a nuclear reactor-powered city built under the Greenland icecap in 1963. Researchers in 2016 say climate change may expose the once ice-bound abandoned base and its associated sewage/radioactive water waste. The disc contains the following three movies: -Big Picture: Ice Cap In this film presentation of THE BIG PICTURE the story is told of our Army's fight against the rugged elements of the northland--a part of the world that must be guarded. Filmed under incredibly difficult conditions in a frozen wasteland, with danger ever present, cameras of the Signal Corps unfold the story of the United States Army Transportation Corps in Greenland working in cooperation with the Government of Denmark on projects of a scientific nature, designed to contribute to our mutual defense. Air transportation has changed the shape of the earth so that these days, the shortest distance between vital areas is over the top of the globe. This is the polar concept. Once just an idea, but today a vital reality which has necessitated a new outlook for the defense of our northern extremities. Features many unique prototype arctic vehicles in early mobility tests. (28 min) - Research and Development in the Arctic "THE BIG PICTURE" cameramen follow Army engineers into Artic wastelands -- The mission of the First Engineer Arctic Task Force of the Army's Corps of Engineers is dramatically filmed by cameramen of THE BIG PICTURE in this film presentation. Across dangerous wastes of ice and snow the camera lens follows these engineer soldiers as they construct roads stretching deeper and deeper into the Arctic. As Army civilian scientists and soldiers of the First Engineer Arctic Task Force penetrate deeper into the Arctic vastness, new problems and new dangers present themselves. In some places, the snow and ice covering the land prevent the engineers from reaching the dirt, or fill, needed for road building. Men and vehicles must travel over the snow. But as the shape of the land far below alters, hidden changes take place in the unseen snow layers underfoot. Dangerous, man-killing crevasses -- great vaults and hundred-foot caverns -- are formed. (27 min) - City Under the Ice: Camp Century (1963) This is the story of the construction of Camp Century, Greenland's city under the ice. After U.S. Army engineers selected the site in may, 1959, needed supplies were delivered to the work camp in a remarkable logistical operation across the icecap. Camp century is now an arctic research center.
