Description: Aristide Maillol Original Lithograph Two Women IICreated for the cover of Verve 5/6, 1939 Matted & Framed under glass Here is a world famous and beautiful original Maillol color lithograph – not a copy – created for Verve magazine, Volume 1, number 5 & 6, October, 1939. Verve commissioned and published original prints by outstanding artists of its day. The image was created by Maillol on the plate, then the edition was printed by Mourlot, in Paris. The lithograph is professionally framed under glass, with a beautiful double mat. I’ve enjoyed it for years, but now I am divesting my collection. I have the certificate of authenticity from the gallery that was my source of this print, which I will mail to the new owner. It indicates that the original plates for this print were destroyed after the edition was printed. Sorry about the photos – the room had many fluorescent lights, so it was very difficult to photo without reflections. The print is not faded, its colors are as brilliant as when originally printed. Aristide Maillol (1861 – 1944, French) was one of the great, outstanding figure sculptors of all time. His style blended Classical studies with modern understandings, and he achieved great fame during his lifetime. His sculptures, paintings, drawings, lithographs, and book illustrations are in the major collections of art around the world. He also produced over 230 prints, woodcuts and lithographs, during his lifetime. The print is 9” x 11”, and the frame measures 15-1/4” x 20”. Maillol's monogram is at lower right. We’re fortunate that the litho was produced in sufficient numbers to make it highly affordable for collectors today. Information about Maillol and illustrations of his work are widespread on the Internet; a good starting place might be Wikipedia.org. Maillol was commissioned to produce many monumental public sculptures commemorating World War I. The advent of World War II at the time this print was created had a great effect on Maillol. His most famous model, Dina Vierny, was active in the resistance and was arrested for helping refugees escape over the mountains into Spain. Maillol’s world reputation as an artist helped him secure her release, and her life was spared. Maillol died in a car accident during the war. Dina later established a museum of his works at his homesite, which remains highly active to this day. The framed print is packed carefully in a carton for shipment via USPS Priority Mail to the 50 states, or by eBay’s global shipping program via Priority Mail International. Thanks for your interest, and have fun collecting!
