His research centers on the culture history of ancient hunter-gatherers of the Archaic period (ca. 11,000-3,000 years ago). Both Sassaman and Pauketat are previous winners of the Southeastern Archaeological Conference's C. B. Moore Award in Southeastern Archaeology.
