BINDING: Half calf over marbled board stamped in gilt..Adriaan Reland was a noted cartographer, Orientalist, and translator with an interest in all the cultures of the Middle East. Reland is most famous for his systematic studies of Mohammedism, generally acknowledged to be the first in Western Civilization. The present volume is an example of Reland's work on Jewish ritual practices and liturgy, utilizing his Orientalist scholarly approach. Quotations in Arabic and Persian in the text, make it obvious that most printers didn't have that type in their cases (utilizing wood cut inserts, apparently). Only one plate, as issued. Printed in Herborn, Germany, an early extension of Reland's printings outside Netherlands. A 1006 page stout whopper, it's fortunately split into two volumes apparently bound in the period (or quite possibly, rebound to the period style). The publisher provides a single title page only, as issued. Johannes Eberhardus Rau was a Protestant theologian who taught Greek and Latin in Herborn. Rau publishing numerous commentaries and some original theological works. BSB notes four original works by him. Extensive information available at Deutsches Biographie in German.
