Description: Antique Creamware Wedgwood jug transfer-printed in black, with sparrow beak and strap handle. One side had a shield with banner inscribed "The Farmers Arms" with lower banner inscribed "In God Is Our Trust" with woman churning butter, man with scythe, flanking farming implements within shield. The reverse side contains a poem focused on the joys from farming: Let the wealthy & great Roll in splendor & state I envy them not I declare it I eat my own lamb My own chickens & ham Shear my own fleece & I wear it I have lawns I have bowers I have fruits I have flowers The Lark is my morning alarmed So jolly boys now Here’s God speed the Plough Long life & success to the Farmer The verse is surrounded by different symbols and scrollwork. Likely made between 1770-1790. The jug measures approximately 6.5 inches high, 7 inches long (from spout to handle) and sits on a 4 inch diameter base. Impressed “W” to base for Wedgwood. There is wear to the glaze on spout and a crack that starts at the rim and curves under the spout. The crack was previously restored and the restoration work has discolored. Crazing throughout. Provenance: deaccessioned from the Fine Art Museums of San Francisco. Museum inventory number painted on foot but is not permanent and can be removed.
