Description: Payment | Shipping ANTIQUE VUILLAUME 'A PARIS 4/4 TRADE VIOLIN MIRECOURT REPAIR/RESTORATION, C-1920 ANTIQUE VUILLAUME 'A PARIS 4/4 TRADE VIOLIN FROM MIRECOURT, FRANCE FOR REMAINING REPAIRS, RESTORATION & SETUP - CIRCA 1920 You are invited to purchase a nice antique handcrafted 4/4 (full size) Vuillaume 'A Paris trade violin from one of the very talented commercial luthiers located in Mirecourt, France. We have completed a series of relatively difficult repairs and restorative actions (see details below) associated with this violin, leaving some relatively simple and straightforward actions to be completed by you, the buyer. Parts needed to complete most of the remaining restoration and/or setup work are included with the violin (see below for details). The buyer will need to add his own preferred set of strings and to arrange to complete the setup of the instrument to achieve a very nice antique French-made violin in fully playable condition. No bow or case are included - also to be provided by the buyer. This will make a great luthier-style project for the right person! VIOLIN ORIGIN & ESTIMATED DATE OF MANUFACTURE: This violin bears the following internal label found under the left f-hole (See accompanying image): Vuillaume, 'a, ParisRue Croix des Petits Champs 46 In addition, the violin is stamped with the following lettering found on the top of the back plate just below the button (See accompanying image): VUILLAUME 'A PARIS Note: The stamp is a bit faded and worn with time, but is still readable in oblique light. Vuillaume is a very respected name in the history of violin making in France beginning with Charles Francois Vuillaume, who worked in Mirecourt from 1755 to 1779. He was followed by Jean Baptiste Vuillaume, who lived from 1798 to 1875 and worked in both Mirecourt and later in Paris. There is, however, wide divergence in quality of instruments made by various bearers of this family name of luthiers - estimated at more than thirty. There are also many instruments stamped with the name and made by several commercial trade manufacturers in Mirecourt, France, which is the seat of the Vuillaume family, as well as, the French center of violin craftmanship. These latter products also vary in quality, but, in general, are known to fall in the range of good to very good. Thus, this particular instrument appears to have been made by an unknown commercial trade violin manufacturer in Mirecourt. Based on its physical condition upon receipt by us before its basic restoration, it appears to date from Circa 1920. KEY PHYSICAL FEATURES: * A warm, very attractive even brown spirit varnish. * Two piece flamed Maple back with ribs of flamed Maple to match the back. * Two piece Spruce top with a relatively fine grain pattern throughout. * Top plate has a moderate arch. MEASUREMENTS: * Length Overall (Loa): 23.25" * Length of the body (LoB): 14.25" * Rib Height: 1 1/8" * Max Width of Upper Bout: 6.25" * Avg. Width at Waist or C-Bout: 4 1/8" * Max. Width of Lower Bout: 7.75" NATURE OF REPAIRS & RESTORATION: This antique violin was received in relatively fair physical and cosmetic condition, but with the distal end of the scroll evidently "chewed" by an animal (mouse, rat or dog) in its past. Following is a summary of the actions taken by us to repair and restore this Vuillaume violin (See image #10 for a before and after view of the restored violin): 1. The top plate was removed from the violin in order to repair a major crack in the center of the lower bout plus other minor cracks (see image). 2. The center seam of the bottom plate was cleated to prevent a possible future separation (see image). 3. Only the rear 2 corners were blocked by the maker. We blocked the upper 2 corners. Thus, now all four corners are blocked (see image). 4. In order to repair the "chewed" scroll, we performed a complete scroll graft. (Please see the accompanying before and after image of this major repair). 5. The bottom plate was re-glued to the ribs using Hide Glue. Both the top and bottom plates were cleaned using JOHA Varnish Cleaner and Brown touch-up varnish was applied to the above noted repairs to the top plate. Note: Before the top plate was restored to the violin, we added a repair label from our shop to the inside of the bottom plate. (Note: Label not shown in the accompanying images). 6. A new full-size Guarneri-style Ebony Chinrest was added to the violin to replace a very small chinrest that came with the violin. 7. The original nut, saddle, endpin, and Ebony fingerboard were retained and used on the restored violin. 8. The pegbox was fitted with the original pegs that came with the violin. However, the original pegs are worn (see images) and will need to be replaced by the new owner. The new owner may wish to replace the worn pegs with Wittner Finetune geared Pegs (Made in Germany), which we highly recommend as an excellent option for consideration. These geared pegs negate the need for fine tuners on the tailpiece as they are permanently set within the pegbox and have an 8:1 gear ratio, making for very precise tuning. Only the central knurled spool segment of the peg rotates so peg slippage is prevented. So once the Wittner pegs are set, they are not designed to be removed from the pegbox. NOTE: Conventional wood peg slippage is a big problem with most violins, something that a player definitely does not want to happen in the middle of a concert solo in front of a large audience. Wittner geared pegs totally eliminate peg slippage so one can play the violin even with vigor without worry. All of the aforementioned repairs have resulted in a partially restored French violin and should improve the overall tonal response and sound quality once the final setup of the violin is completed by the new owner. Thus, this antique instrument that could have easily been lost to time has been improved and reborn to live a second life in the present. REMAINING ACTIONS NEEDED BY THE NEW OWNER IN ORDER TO COMPLETE THE RESTORATION & SETUP: 1. Install a new tailpiece. (Note: A new Conrad Gotz tailpiece is provided for this purpose - See image). Also, a Wittner fine tuner is also provided for the E-string (Note: Image of the fine tuner is not shown). 2. Replace the worn pegs in the pegbox with new Ebony pegs or Wittner Geared Pegs (Owners choice). 3. Prepare and properly fit a new bridge. (Note: A new blank bridge is provided for this purpose). 4. Cut, fit and install a new sound post. (Note: A new uncut Spruce sound post is included). 5. Install a new set of strings (owner's choice) and tune the violin. So, in summary, we have completed the relatively difficult repairs and restoration work for you. You can now do the relatively easy remaining work and setup to complete the project. Enjoy completing the remaining tasks and ultimately to play this restored antique violin from Mirecourt, France!
