Description: Antique or Vintage French Gien Porcelain Plate, History of Joan of Arc, “Joan of Arc, Prisoner of the English” This antique or vintage plate is signed on the back “Porcelaine opaque de Gien. France” with the mark used between 1886 and 1938 by the “Faïenceries de Gien”. There is also a numbered mark impressed on the bottom, signifying the date of manufacture. The “Faïenceries de Gien”, located near Orleans, were founded in 1821 and are one of the most famous porcelain manufacturers in France. This plate is the eleventh from a series on the history of Joan of Arc. The central image, in “grisaille”, is titled “Jeanne d’Arc prisonnière des Anglais” and shows Joan of Arc chained in a dungeon cell. The rose colored border is handsomely designed in a classical pattern of alternating images of trophies and winged heads surrounded by leaves. In very good condition, with the exception of a few signs of wear on the glazing around the edges, this plate will bring a bit of French history into your decor and would be an excellent addition to your collection!
