Scottish jewelry and agate as a gem exploded in popularity during the 1850's when Queen Victoria and her consort husband Albert bought Balmoral Castle. They fell in love with all things Scotland and Albert had whole suites of jewelry, buckles, belt and buttons made to remind his queen of their favorite home away from home. A Dirk is a traditional Scottish blade, similar to a Sgian Dubh but usually larger. It is a sidearm that became popular during the Jacobite uprisings. While the knife is still part of full Highland attire, the form has been miniaturized to become a kilt pin or shawl brooch so it can be worn for all occasions. They can be silver with simple etching or completely blinged out in gold and set with faceted citrine cairngorms and agates. The pin we offer falls between these two extremes but with its own unique features. First, this is a genuine, circa 1880, Victorian era piece. You can see this in the original, untouched details of the pin: a "C" clasp, a tube hinged pin, fine hand engraving, and wonderful natural agates. Lengths available in the pictures. Over 3” inches long There may be a stamp under the tarnish. Overall the brooch is in excellent antique condition: the "C" catch and tube hinge pin stem are in working order. We'll let the next owner decide how much more to brighten it. It is in clean and very good condition and perfect to present to your Highland fan.
