ANTIQUE VICTORIAN GRADUATED NATURAL CORAL BEAD NECKLACE 16" GOLD CLASP 46g

Description: This beautiful antique necklace is a stunning example of Victorian jewelry. Hand knotted, graduated natural coral beads and hexagonal tube clasp make for a simple but elegant combination. The necklace is approximately 16 inches end to end and has a solid gold tube closure. The clasp is not stamped with a Hallmark, but after years of owning this piece I just noticed the faintest little inscription. Hardly visible to the naked eye, and not even clearly legible with jeweler's loupe. The best I can decipher is 11 8 8, and a word etched in cursive, beginning with the letter K, possibly followed by another word which appears to be all lowercase lettering. The numbers may indicate a date, and the lettering could possibly be a name of the creator, or possibly gift recipient or owner. I am unsure, it's rather mysterious! The clasp is interesting and unusually designed. A variation of the standard tube clasp from the time period, with 6 flattened sides. Tests positive at at least 10K gold with acid, though I suspect it may be 12K. It functions well, and still holds securely. The coral beads are natural, and are a rich earthyorange color and vary in their hues, shapes and thickness. A few of the beads exhibit darkened inclusions, and pocks. One contains a small piece of what appears to be a shell fragment embedded within. Cord shows some fraying, but is thick and still remains secure and intact, ready to wear!
