Antique Very Fine 5" Tile 18th Century from The Hancock Manor

Description: Offered is a nice 5 x 5 tile that has been framed. The overall dimensions are 7 1/2" x 7 1/2". It was obtained by this seller at an auction in Wilton, NH of the assets from a member of the Frye family, a prominent local family. Included are two pieces of handwritten paper chronicling the history of the tile and how it came into their possession. The tile is part of a fireplace at Hancock Manor, home of United States Founding Father, John Hancock, and located at 30 Beacon Street on Beacon Hill in Boston, Massachusetts. It stood near the southwest corner of what are today the grounds of the Massachusetts State House. The Manor was built between 1734 and 1737. In 1863 the Hancock Manor was sold and the building torn down. According to the papers, the tile was given to Mary Frye's great grandfather, Salmon Whitney as he was passing the Manor which was being torn down. This bit of family lore was told to the author's mother, Alice E. Frye by her Aunt Lizzie Whitney, daughter of Salmon, in the earlier writing dated December 24, 1926. Mary Frye's writing is dated April 21, 1977. Salmon Whitney was born in Massachusetts in 1788. Please look at the photos.
