Description: Up for sale is an unusual - era manufactured - antique U. S. Model 1840 Musicians Presentation Sword w/ blackened metal scabbard having plated brass throat and drag. This non-standard U. S. M1840 Musicians sword has a 31 inch plated blade without any visible markings on the blade’s ricasso, presumably they were removed during the plating process. The presentation has been engraved into the fuller and reads: SERGEANT G.H. BARTON 1915. I was told that this sword came out of an old Arizona collection and its exact date of manufacture is unknown. Two plausible reasons for the metal scabbard; 1) It’s an NCO length, Emerson & Silver steel body single screw scabbard which were supplied with NCO & Musicians swords contrary to US Ordnance Department specifications. or 2) It is a post 1860's U.S. Ordnance replacement NCO scabbard. Overall the modification is first rate, and was nicely done. It would be nice to know who this Sergeant was, why was it presented, and who was or were the presenters - a great research project no doubt. Please view all photos as they are part of the sword's description.
