Description: Tsuchiya Koitsu 土屋光逸 (1870-1949) was a Japanese print artist of the Shin Hanga movement. He trained under the ukiyo-e master Kobayashi Kiyochika, and in the 1930’s began designing woodblock prints for the Shozaburo Watanabe publishing house. A contemporary of Hiroshi Yoshida and Kawase Hasui, Koitsu is known for his landscapes and images of traditional Japanese architecture. This print depicts the torii gate at Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Hiroshima, Japan. Among Koitsu’s oeuvre of designs, his images of rain and night scenes are especially popular and well-collected. This print is most likely from a later edition published by Doi Eiichi in the 1980’s as the rain and coloring of the water matches with other impressions from that period. This design can be found in the Art Institute of Chicago and Honolulu Museum of Art.
