Description: Antique Thomas Mayer Dinner Plate. This wonderful antique purple transfer-ware dinner plate, circa 1836-1838, is an earlier "Abbey Ruins" pattern. The center motif depicts an abbey building falling into disrepair, with three cows lingering in the foreground and two others in the background. A castle, trees and mountains are in the distance. The wide scalloped border and verge of the plate is decorated with clusters of large and small flowers and fruit arrangements against a stippled background. The plate measures approximately 9 3/8" across. On the back is the manufacturer's mark, "Abbey Ruins" and T. Mayer Longport. The plate is almost 200 years old and has a chip on the upper left, front side. There is a hairline crack on the front upper right side and crazing on the back. In several spots the glaze has worn off.The Mayer company was located in Staffordshire, England and run at one point by three Mayer brothers, Thomas, John and Joseph.
