Description: This gorgeous early 1900s mortar and pestle set is crafted from solid brass, and beautiful decorative elements. The mortar has a cylindrical shape with a flared mouth and two angular handles at the sides. The bottom is engraved with the number “8” which presumably related to size (perhaps capacity or volume). The size, thick walls, and heavy weight of this piece suggest it was used for grinding small amounts of materials in a laboratory or apothecary setting. The mortar measures 5.25”H x 5.5”W including handles x 5.25” top rim diameter x 3.25” bottom rim diameter and pestle is 7.5” long with 1.25” diameter on bottom end and 1” on the other end. Total weight of both pieces is 4 pounds 13 oz. Overall, the set is in very good condition with some scratches and nicks mostly on pestle and bottom of mortar, consistent with age and use, but certainly add to the charm and character of these old pieces. Please review all photos as they are part of the description. The timeless design and expert craftsmanship make this piece a true relic of the past, dating back to the pre-1930s. It would make an excellent addition to any antique or scientific collection. This set is functional for crushing herbs, spices, medications, etc. but would also makes beautiful and unique decor piece in an office, kitchen or anywhere in your home.
