Description: Wonderful antique Satsuma set of five cups and saucers - Meiji period, depicting people in various settings. This is a stunning antique set featuring finely hand painted details and fine gilding. The pieces are thickly potted, and decorated with highly detailed hand painted images. The cups also have beautiful borders on the interiors. Measuring cups 2 5/8” H and 2 7/8” wide across the top rims. The saucers are approximately 5 3/8” wide. All pieces have a mark, unfortunately it the marks were almost removed. As far as I’m aware, this practice was common during 1940s (WWII era). I occasionally see German and Japanese marks scratched off from porcelain items. But on some pieces the mark still shows and the Shimazu family crest is visible. My assumption all the pieces were marked with same mark. Condition - Some wear to gold and decorations but not extensive. Use related marks and wear on the feet. Minor scabs on the feet areas. Typical fine crazing throughout. Some discoloration related to crazing and mostly visible on undersides or interior. The cups (2cups) handles has minor scabs (rough area) on the tip (the dragon ear areas) . Other than that, I haven’t noticed chips or repairs. Use related marks and scratches. It’s is a wonderful and fine example of Japanese ceramics of the late 19th and early 20th era.
