Description: An old Orientalist or biblical scene painting, oil on paper on board, 8 1/2" by 13", 16" by 20" framed (no glass), signed in Cyrillic boldly at lower right "Bobrov". The work could perhaps be by one of two listed Russian artists, Aleksei Alekseevich Bobrov (1849-1899), or Viktor Alejewitsch Bobrov (1842-1918), or, it could be by neither artist. What is certain is that this is old, and nicely executed. We are looking at a scene in the Middle East, evidently, with palm trees and camels in the background, and a group of what look like shepherds from a Bible scene hovering over a central figure, the focal point of the painting, looking like a prisoner that resembles Christ. The work has some condition issues including a crack of about 1 1/2" extending upwards from the lower right center edge; corner creases at upper left; a heavy crease extending upwards at an angle from the group of figures; and an area of brown paint at lower right that could possibly be overpainted. The back of the old black board perhaps at one time had a written sheet with information; that sheet if it existed was removed and possibly displayed on the backing paper as there is an empty space there that seems to have had something in it at one time. All of this information if it existed is now absent. Older Russian art is quite scarce and desirable.
