Description: This is a large earthenware serving platter that measures approximately 13 ½” by 9 ½”. It is oval in shape and features a bright white background decorated with a dainty green floral transfer print along the border of the platter. A green crown inkstamp, “The Milan - Ridgways Vitrified England”, on the base identifies this as a piece of Ridgways Pottery, a well-known manufacturer of printed earthenware. It was made in England at Ridgways the Bedford Works, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire factory, and according to the mark was produced circa 1905-1912. The pattern name, “The Milan”, is part of the stamp and there is an incised mark that reads, “Vitrified” with what appears to be the numerals, “2/17”. Considering its advanced age this sizeable platter is in good condition. There is a small chip along the rim, wear to the green print, slight crazing on the underside of the rim, some scuff/rub marks, scratches, a few darkened blemishes and a few other manufacturing flaws. Despite these imperfections this is a wonderful antique English platter that has been well-preserved and is a pretty serving piece.
