This work was translated by Laurentius Uwens from the latin ed., published in the same year: 'Imago primi saeculi societatis Iesu ...' The famous centennial publication of the Low Countries Jesuits, containing beautiful emblematic engravings. Artists and Engravers: Authors: Johannes Bolland (1596-1665), Jean de Tollenaere (1582-1643), Sidronius de Hossche (1596-1653), Jacques van de Walle (1599-1690), Philip Fruytiers (1610-1666). Engraver: Cornelis Galle (Flemish 1576-1650). Subject: Page 102, emblem: ''Canitis surdis, canitisque ligatis.'' (Close off your senses for mermaids, because who hears them has to leave ship.). The emblem shows sailors warned against listening to the mermaid''s singing and dying as a result. This symbolizes the Society''s vow of chastity. The emblem shows Moses and the burning bush undamaged by fire as mentioned in the biblical exodus narrative. This symbolizes the Society''s strength and that it will not be harmed.
