Description: Beautiful pair of antique Ko Kutani vases. Ko Kutani is an old style of Kutani decoration. Most people are used to the bold red and gold Kutani that was exported to the west. Ko Kutani was a softer, gentler, more organic style of porcelain decoration common before the more well known style. These vases are signed on the bottom with Kutani marks. They have remnants of old collection stickers on the bases as well. They are in perfect condition. There is one tiny blister in the glaze on one vase that happened during firing, it’s not later damage. They are 5.5” high. The pair come with an old collection note. It references pages from several books that contain information relevant to these vases along with other information. Seems they were purchased by their former owned in the 1960’s in CA. This is an interesting pair of old Japanese vases. The note seems to refer to both the Edo and Meiji periods. It also references a porcelain decorator named Ishida Heizo who was active in the Meiji period. I’m not sure when these were actually made. Meiji seems most likely. Heizo was part of some of the big 19th century global expositions that Japan participated in. That means he was one of the top craftsmen of his era. Japan sent works by their finest crafts people to these expositions all around the world to show off what the country was capable of producing. It would be neat to own pieces by one of those craftsmen if these vases were indeed made by Heizo. No matter who made these or when they were made they are very fine examples of Ko Kutani wares. You probably won’t ever find a nicer pair in this Ko Kutani style. Ships ASAP! Thanks
