Schillare Son of David and Angele (Mondor) Schillare born in Saint DavidMarried Edwardina L Mondor, of Salem on 24 April 1882 in Northampton by Rev Patrick J Callery. She was the daughter of Armand and Ellen (Theiren) Mondor of Canada.His family moved from Canada to Florence in 1863, and in 1867 settled in Leeds.He started working at the cotton mills in Florence at the age of 9. When his family moved to Leeds, he went to work for the Nonotuck Silk Company.On a visit to the Knowlton Brothers photographers, he asked if they would be willing to provide training in photography. He spent 4 months learning the trade. At the end of that time, he returned to the silk mill.On 16 May 1874, the flood destroyed the mill. The Knowlton Brothers were seeking extra employees to take photographs of the destruction for stereoview sales and hired him.He was naturalized on 28 October 1879 in the Northampton Superior Court.By 1882, he had left Knowlton Brothers and established his own studio at 108 Main Street. From 1898, it was located at 142 Main Street. Some time after 1904, he also opened the Schillare Real Estate Agency at 142 Main Street.A.J. did well. He owned their homes in Northampton. He bought a cottage on Upper Pond, Belchertown that the family used during the summer. When the family was not using the cottage, A.J. rented it out during the summer and in the fall rented it as a hunting camp with a built in herd of deer that drank from the pond. During the winter, he had an ice business from the pond with a spur from the B&M Railroad laid to it to expedite shipping the ice in 1909. In Very Good overall condition. Image is clean and crisp with only faint signs of wear or handling. Matting shows gentle corner wear and a small piece torn on the reverse side. Displays quite handsomely.
