Description: This is a lovely and charming Antique Old 19th c. English Impressionist Woman Portrait Oil Painting on canvas, by turn of the century English Impressionist painter, John Andrew McColvin (1864 - 1920.) McColvin was known for vibrant coastal scenes, depicting working class life among the fisherfolk. This particular artwork depicts an image from this popular genre, of a beautiful young brunette woman carrying a basket over her head. In the distance, a rocky coastal shoreline can be seen, along with a vivid blue sky above. Signed: "J.A. McColvin" in the lower right corner. Approximately 13 3/4 x 21 3/4 inches (including frame.) Actual artwork is approximately 8 x 16 1/8 inches. This piece likely dates to the 1890's - 1910's. Very good condition for age, with one tiny and unnoticeable scuff to the painted surface, and mild edge wear to the gilded wood frame (please see photos.) Acquired in Los Angeles County, California. He married his wife Isabella (nee Stewart) in Newcastle in 1889 and by 1891 was living at 82 Mowbray Street, Heaton, Newcastle with his wife and son and was listed as an Artist Painter. In 1901 he was living at Whitley, Tynemouth also making his living as an artist. In 1911 he moved to 12 Blackhorse Lane, East Croydon and subsequently to 38 Lebanon Road, where he died in 1920, leaving a wife and four children.He did not appear to exhibit his work, as there are no records in any of our reference books, but there are 5 of his painting in the National Collection, 2 with the National Trust, 2 with N. E. Lincolnshire Museum Service and 1 at Haworth Art Gallery. Colvin, J. M. Colvin, M. Colvin We can state quite categorically that his name, according to Births Marriages and Deaths and Census Records, is John Andrew McColvin. James Andrew McColvin, also known as John McColvin, (his registered birth name), was an accomplished regional British artist, born in Winlaton, county Durham (now the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead, Tyne and Wear) in 1864. As a young man he lived in Newcastle and worked as an apprentice jeweller. He married Isabella Stewart in 1889 and by 1891 the family were living at 82 Mowbray Street, Heaton, Newcastle. By this time his occupation was given as an Artist Painter. In 1901 he was still working as an artist, but now living in Whitely, Tynemouth. In 1911 he moved to 12 Blackhorse Lane in East Croydon. After this he lived at 38 Lebanon Road in East Croydon, where he died in 1920.
