Description: ARTIST: Christian Benjamin Olsen is a well-listed Danish artist, whose works have been offered at auctions multiple times, including famous auction houses such as Bruun Rasmussen, Bonham’s and Sotheby’s. He was a popular exhibitor at the famous Charlottenborg. From 1906-1935, he also worked as a decorator - first at Bing & Grøndahl and later at the Royal Copenhagen porcelain workshop. He is almost exclusively a marine painter and during his life, he traveled a lot to study and paint ships and seascapes from around the world. Today a few of his works can be found in art museums in Denmark. PAINTING: Oil on canvas mounted on board. The painting is an accurate rendering of the Argentine ship “Presidente Sarmiento”, which visited Copenhagen in 1902. Built in 1897, this magnificent vessel was built as a training ship for young cadets from the Argentine Navy. During her service life, the “Presidente Sarmiento” circumnavigated the globe 6 times. Today, she is a museum ship and can be seen in Buenos Aires. Behind the ship, one can see parts of “Holmen”, which used to be a significant naval base for the Danish Navy. Also visible, to the left of the “Presidente Sarmiento”, is an old steamboat. The painting is dated to 1902. Signed: “Chr Benjamin Olsen” in the lower left corner. SIZE: With frame: 42 cm/16.5" * 35 cm/13.8". Without frame: 32 cm/12.6" * 25 cm/9.8". CONDITION: The painting is in good ready-to-hang condition - no holes, tears or missing paint, but it has faint vertical marks near the edge of the frame. The frame has scratches, stains and chips.
