Description: A 2 1/8 inch tall beautiful RED RUBY flashed glass cup with a light PURPLE AMETHYST colored base. An antique cup from Ogden Utah with handle. Note that the BODY is flashed RUBY RED color but the very bottom portion and the handle are a Sun Colored Amethyst = SCA. This is an ORIGINAL ANTIQUE blown-glass CUP that dates WELL OVER 100 YEARS OLD old. Cup reads: "Souvenir / Ogden, Utah." Condition: It is in nice clean condition and the engraving is super strong. It does have age wear, mainly on the base, including some tiny flakes along the edge of base. Otherwise there isn't anything specifically wrong with it. NO chips, cracks, dings, damage, etc. Please see pictures for best idea of overall appearance / condition. A great looking Early American Pattern Glass (EAPG) cup from a state that you don't commonly seen these type of items from UTAH. Back in the day souvenirs like this were often won at small-town fairs, sold in small businesses or at tourist's stands during large events and celebrations. The lettering is engraved in a SILVER LEAF PAINT, which gives it a very appealing look against the red color and amethyst tinted base AND the engraving is super BOLD! You hear about old glass turning purple ... this amethyst tint that is in the base and handle of this little mug are the result of it being blown with glass that had manganese added to it. Manganese is a mineral that was pulverized and added to vats of liquid glass, to make the glass crystal clear, otherwise it is naturally a deep aqua marine color. Only clear glass from before 1915 had manganese in it. When exposed to sunlight the manganese starts to oxidize and turns a nice amethyst or lavender color, the result of a chemical reaction. The longer it is in the sun light, the darker purple it turns. A glass item has to be old enough to begin with, as with few exceptions, only clear glass from before 1915 had manganese in it. With the start of WWI, manganese was no longer available as foreign imports decreased and domestic resources turned towards the war effort. NO MORE purple glass after 1915!
